Guy buys Nintendo shares, complains at AGM about Splatoon

If you are a video game company with a lot of beloved IP, I guess it is par for the course to expect fans to be shareholders, and for said fans to attend your AGM to ask... unusual questions... about your products.

Nintendo held it's 82nd AGM on 23 June 2023, and a frustrated fan of the Splatoon game complained about the lack of customization options (such as hairstyles and emotes) for the male characters, compared to the female characters.

He apparently went on a "rant" and when CEO Shuntaro Furukawa told him he was taking too long with his question, he refused to stop. At the end, the CEO thanked him for being a fan and for his feedback.

Twitter user @haruikatako claimed to be the person asking the question and shared more details. It seems he wrote letters to the company and because there were no responses, resorted to buying a Switch with a credit card, selling it at a loss. All so he could buy a single lot of Nintendo shares.

Nintendo shares trade in lots of 100 shares, so he paid JPY 512,400 (roughly SGD 5,124). He seemed to have made a loss of JPY 15,000 on the sale of the Switch.

There is something to admire about his sentiments, and at least he got some nice meat buns are the Kyoto station on the way home.

But for all those reading this, please do not use debt in this manner.

I hope he held on to those shares, because they are worth roughly JPY 652,000 now and it would have recouped his losses from the Switch.
