The Power of Game Engines

What are game engines? According to Wikipedia:

A game engine is a software framework primarily designed for the development of video games, and generally includes relevant libraries and support programs. The "engine" terminology is similar to the term "software engine" used in the software industry.

In simple terms, it is a software or a set of software that allows someone to make a game. For example, when a player presses a button on their game controller, the game developer needs a way to tell the PC or console to move the character to the left, or jump, or stop.

Instead of creating the game by writing software code from scratch, the game engine allows the game developer to say "if player presses left button, move character to left, move screen to show the left side of the room".

This is very important because it democratizes game making, by allowing more people to create games, at a higher quality, faster.

In recent years, game engines have come a long way and the graphics are getting closer and closer to super realistic quality. You may have seen the Matrix short, made on the Unreal Engine (by Epic, the creator of Fortnite)
