Nintendo's Switch console is entering it's 7th year and it is showing its age. For Nintendo fans, speculation on the form the next iteration will take and it's launch date is a fun and entertaining exercise that may soon get more intense.
A number of sources have emerged over the last few weeks to suggest that a 2024 launch may be on the cards. Let's take a look at what they say.
1) PixArt Imaging Inc
PixArt Imaging Inc. makes components found in Joy-Con for the Switch. This company is listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) (3227 TW) and according to this MoneyDJ article, sources reveal that a Japanese game company that is releasing a new console after many years that will benefit the company results in early 2024.
While Nintendo is not mentioned, PixArt has been collaborating with Nintendo for many years, since the WII and WII U days. Note however, that I can't find the primary source for the news in this article, so do take it with a pinch of salt.
2) Hongzhun Precision
According to MoneyDJ (again), Hongzhun Precision, a Taiwanese metal casing maker, anticipates that sales will improve in 1st quarter of 2024, as Nintendo plans to launch it's new switch during this period
3) Video Games Chronicle (VGC)
According to this article from VGC, their sources have informed them that Nintendo is likely to release new hardware during 2H 2024. Development kits for the new console are now with key partner studios.
The rumoured specs:
- can be used in portable mode like current model
- LCD instead of OLED screen, to bring down costs
- will have physical cartridge slots
In case it is not clear, these are all rumours and so you should take all of them with a pinch of salt.
It is notable that as the Switch enters the last years of it's shelf life, this is a good time to launch the next version. Even Nintendo is acknowledging that sales for the Switch will probably struggle in the current year.
