Crypto and the Constitution of the United States of America

Over 200 years ago, 13 colonies banded together to throw off the yoke of a tyrannical king. This band of brave freedom fighters enshrined their covenant in a sacred text, of which 500 were produced.

After many years, only 13 copies survive and another band of brave men and women have gathered to save one of these copies... also known as the Constitution of the United States of America!

This is probably what the participants in the ConstitutionDAO thinks they are doing, or at least how I imagined it. One of the surviving copies of the Constitution is going on auction at Sotheby's today (18th November) and a sort of crypto flashmob has sprung up to pool their resources to bid for this.

Their intention is to put the document on public display by issuing a "governance token" which does not provide ownership, but just determines where the Constitution will be displayed. IF they win, of course.

For more details, read this BBC article.

As of the time of this writing, the website claims to have raised 40million towards this goal.

I cannot help but wonder, when we look back in 10 years, is this a sign of the crazy times we are going through, or a trailblazing form of participatory democracy.

To be absolutely clear, I am not endorsing any of this. I am sure many of you cannot help but recall the Nicholas Cage movie National Treasure.

I will end this post with this totally unrelated but totally funny clip. Enjoy
